Especially for you we invite famous artists from Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts of I. Repin to give a master class in portrait painting in Italy, in the beautiful region and green heart of Italy- Umbria. These famous artists will teach you how to paint a beautiful portrait from the model in 10 days against the backdrop of picturesque nature. You will paint portraits and landscape. The artists will learn you new techniques that will help to improve the quality of your work. The amazing views and picturesque surroundings will inspire you to make beautiful paintings. Painting, plein air and enjoying the scenery will undoubtedly be an unforgettable experience. Methods and techniques will be demonstrated by our artists. You will be inspired by the master class and return home with a real sense of achievement and a beautiful art works.

I select the teachers for our course based on the highest requirements. All of them are the best graduates of the Academy of Arts, the I. Repin the best educational institution in St. Petersburg and one of the best in the world, focused on the classical realistic art. In our course we strictly follow the academic rules in the painting, relying on the best examples of art, both Russian and worldwide. All instructions in the master class will be done in English.

About the portrait painting course

This course is an integrated course “Portrait in plein air”. You will have a unique opportunity to paint a portrait surrounded by the magnificent nature of the Umbrian region. Full-scale work with a model in the open air is radically different from working in the studio. Outdoor lighting and the warm-cold interrelation of lights and shadows are completely different than when working in the studio. We will study this during our unique course. Each student is guaranteed an individual approach, taking into consideration his needs.

The course structure

The course includes:

• 10 days painting classes, 40 hours of work in total
• Of which is 1 day – plein air in Castelluccio-4 hours
• 1 day off (possible trip to Assisi. Visiting the Basilica di San Francesco, galleries. Everyone decides how to spend their day off. The trip to Assisi is not included in the total price of the course).

At the end of each working day, the teacher reviews all the paintings and gives advice for further work.

Total: 36 Hours Portrait + 4 Hours Plein air = 40 Hours

Total paintings: 3 (1 painting head, 1 painting head and hands, 1 painting landscape).

The small village of Castelluccio di Norcia, part of the Monti Sibillini National Park, is located 28 kilometres from Norcia. From a height of almost 1500 meters above sea level the panoramas of divine beauty open in late spring and early summer. Daffodils, violets, poppies, buttercups, clover, lentils… and many other flowers form of a non-man-made fragrant mosaic carpet.

Portrait painting goals

To study the compositional arrangement of the canvas •To understand the proportions of large and small head shapes • To deepen the anatomical analysis and its application in the painting process • To refine the details of the face (nose, eyes, lips, etc.). To develop a broader colour and tonal vision and carefully implement all aspects.

Plein air painting goals

To learn the rules of perspective, proportions, “clean” colour palette, and aerial perspective. • To understand how to apply cold and warm colours and create subtle colour transitions • To master the techniques of applying oil paints. To develop a broader colour vision and carefully implement all aspects.

Payment for the course:

The course price is 2750 euros (excluding VAT) per person. The course fee includes:

• Course in oil painting – 40 hours plus individual discussion of works.
• 10 days of training (morning and afternoon classes)
• 12 hotel nights including breakfast in Umbria
• 10 lunches during the breaks of the course
• 1 evening “Meet & Greet” (champagne, fruit and cheese)
• 1 dinner grill & wine.
• Refreshment drinks during the day (tea, coffee, and soft drinks)
• Materials: Portable easels, canvases, brushes, oil paints thinner, palette knives, palettes, aprons.
